Online Giving | Pledge Cards | Other Giving Opportunities Reason for Giving Christian Stewardship Begins With God's Love As Christian stewards, we are God's trustees who are chosen to take care of all that is important to God. Joseph was like that. You remember the story of Joseph, don't you? He was the seventeen-year-old boy who had the coat of many colors. His brothers, in a jealous fit, took the coat and tossed him into a pit. That is where most of us leavem him. Do you remember what happened next? Joseph came out of the pit to become the second most important person in Egypt. Only the Pharaoh was more important. What made Joseph important? He had such an intimate relationship with God that he could interpret the Pharaoh's dreams and knew there would be years of wealth and prosperity, followed by years of famine. As a result of Joseph's relationship with God, he was chosen by Egypt to manage everything in the land of Egypt. Beacuse of Joseph's stewarding, Egypt was prepared for anything. The Christian steward, like Joseph, is one who cultivates an intimate relationship with God. It is a relationship of prayer, Bible study, spiritual growth, constancy in worship, service to the community and giving. Yes, Christian stewarship begins with God's love, but it goes on to affirm God's ownership. When we design our ministry from a secular definition of stewardship, we accept the secular understanding that everything a person has is his or her own. A Christian understanding of stewardship, however, affirms that all we have is God's. A friend once designed an overhead slide for me to use in seminars. It shows a hearse with a rental truck on the back. How much of what we have is really ours? Creating a Climate for Giving by donald W.
